Challenger Limited was established in 1991 in the Isle of Man as a private company. The company is a drilling and work-over services provider.
Starting with just nine rigs during its inception, Challenger now operates 29 rigs, 25 of which are under long-term contracts in Libya. Challenger employees count for more than 1300 in various specializations, including but not limited to, onshore drilling and work-over techniques, mechanical and electrical engineering, preventative maintenance, QHSE, legal and contracts, financial and banking, human resources and IT.
Challenger is considered one of the oldest and largest privately held, land drilling and work-over companies in North Africa. In October 1991, the Tatanaki family took over worldwide ownership of both the trade name and of the then existing drilling operation in Libya from the original Canadian owner. Since then, Challenger has been recognized as a contract oilfield drilling and work-over services provider that operates a sizable rig fleet through a network of registered branches and subsidiaries in the Middle East and Africa, with its Regional Office being located in Cairo, Egypt.
